In praise of shorty
The most politically formative relationship of my life would have to be my observances of grandpa Hurst. Shorty was a man that worked incredibly hard in his life. He had his flaws (obviously) but he never stopped working. What his motivations were we may never know but when you talk about the working poor he was the poster boy. He was a man who worked hard everyday of his life and never made it. Whenever some republican asshole starts spouting off about poor people are lazy I have to laugh and realize that they have the misfortune of never knowing a man of Charles Hurst's gumption. We are lucky in that way that we have witnessed first hand the struggle for the American dream. So here is the praise of Shorty belated as it is. Unfortunately his son will probably vote for Bush. I raise my glass to Charles Hurst who taught me that the man can never get you down if you don't let him.
